Setting up Instagram Accounts for Effect Distribution

Individual creators that are part of our closed Beta program can publish effects to Instagram.

To publish an effect to Instagram, your Instagram account must be connected to a personal Facebook account, not a Page. The Facebook account the Instagram account is connected to will be the 'effect owner', and they will manage the effect.

During the beta, you can't publish to accounts owned by businesses. Effects that promote businesses, products or people in the effect content, name or icon won't be approved, and may result in removal from the beta.

Use these guidelines to:

  • Choose an owner for Instagram effects.
  • Set up a personal Instagram account for effect distribution.
  • Set up a business Instagram account for effect distribution.
  • Learn about who can see your effect.

Choosing an Effect Owner

The owner is the Facebook profile that will manage the effect.

The Instagram account linked to that Facebook profile will determine 2 things:

  • The followers of the Instagram account will be able to discover the effect in the Instagram camera while browsing through effects.
  • The effect will be attributed to this Instagram account, which means the account's name and profile picture will appear alongside the effect in the Instagram camera.

Configuring a Personal Instagram Account for Effect Distribution

If you just have one Instagram account and a Facebook profile, it's simple to get set up. You can link your Instagram account to your Facebook profile by following these instructions.

This will allow you to use your Facebook profile to manage the effect, and choose the Instagram account whose followers will be able to discover the effect. You can only connect one Facebook profile to each Instagram account.

You'll need to refresh Spark Hub after you link your Instagram account.

If your Instagram account is linked to a Facebook Page

If your account is connected to a Facebook Page, you may need to first disconnect it, and then link it back to your personal Facebook profile to be able to publish effects to it. You can do this in the Instagram app.

To disconnect your account from the Page:

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu icon.
  2. Tap Settings > Account > Linked Accounts, then select Facebook.
  3. Tap Unlink Account (iOS) or Unlink (Android).

To link your account back to your personal profile:

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu icon.
  2. Tap Settings > Account > Linked Accounts, then select Facebook.
  3. If you haven't already, enter your Facebook login information.
  4. Select Facebook Profile under Share to (Android), or tap Share to and choose Facebook Profile (iOS).

You'll need to refresh Spark Hub after doing this. You should then be able to publish effects to your account.

Please note that during Beta, you should only publish effects to Instagram accounts that represent you as the owner. Effects submitted to other Instagram accounts will be rejected during review.

Configuring a Business Instagram Account for Effect Distribution

You can convert your personal Instagram account to a 'Business Account' for additional insights about followers and posts.

You can use a business account to publish effects, as long as it belongs to an individual (person or influencer) and not a business (company). The account should also be connected to your Facebook profile, not a Facebook Page.

If you haven't converted to a business account yet

To make sure you're able to continue publishing effects after converting your personal account to a business account, follow these steps in the Instagram app:

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu icon.
  2. Tap Settings > Account > Linked Accounts, then tap Switch to Business Account.
  3. When you get to the screen titled Connect Your Facebook Page, tap Don't Connect to Facebook Now.
  4. Follow the rest of the on-screen instructions to set up your business account.

If you've already converted to a business account

If you already set up your business account and didn't connect it to a Facebook page at the time, you're ready to publish.

If you did connect a Facebook Page when converting to a business account, you'll need to remove the Page from the account. In the Instagram app:

  1. Go to your profile and the tap the menu icon.
  2. Tap Settings > Account > Switch Back to Personal Account.
  3. Once complete, tap Switch to Business Account.
  4. When you get to the screen titled Connect Your Facebook Page, tap Don't Connect to Facebook Now.
  5. Follow the rest of the on-screen instructions to set up your business account again.

You'll need to refresh Spark AR Hub. You should then be able to publish effects to your business account.

Who Can See Your Effect

Followers of the Instagram accounts you select will be able to see your effect when browsing in the Instagram camera.

If someone shares a story using your effect, a “Try It” button will be displayed on the story. Anyone can try the effect by clicking the “Try It” button, not just the followers of the account.
