Updating Spark AR Studio Effects

Effects made in older versions of Spark AR Studio may need to be updated and resubmitted to Spark AR Hub, so they work properly and keep appearing in the Instagram or Facebook camera. Currently, we guarantee effects will work for 6 months before you need to update them.

If an effect needs to be updated you’ll get an email or notification on Facebook, and see a warning in Spark AR Hub.

How to update an effect depends on whether it was:

  • Last saved in v55 of Spark AR Studio or below.
  • Last saved in v56 or above.

If your effect was last saved in v55 or below

Later versions of Spark AR Studio are available on both macOS and Windows. Becuase Spark AR Studio is updated regularly, these new versions are different from early macOS only releases. This means you’ll need to follow some extra steps to update effects made in v55 or eariler. You should:

  1. Open the effect in a macOS only version of Spark AR Studio that’s v56 or above. You can download one here under Older versions of Spark AR Studio (macOS-only version).
  2. Fix any issues.
  3. Save the effect.
  4. Open the effect in the most recent version of Spark AR Studio.
  5. Save it again.

The effect will now be updated. Next you’ll need to export it and submit it to Spark AR Hub.

If your effect was last saved in v56 or above

Once you've updated to the most recent version of Spark AR Studio, check your effect still works and fix any issues.

To do this:

  1. Open the effect in the most recent version of Spark AR Studio.
  2. Fix any issues.
  3. Save the effect.

The effect will now be updated. Next you’ll need to export it and submit it to Spark AR Hub.

Exporting and submitting the effect to Spark AR Hub

After you’ve updated an effect you’ll need to export it from Spark AR Studio and submit the new version for review in Spark AR Hub.

You can either submit the file as an update of the original effect or as a completely new effect. For example, you’d submit a new effect if you want to make it available on Instagram.

We'll review the updated effect to make sure there aren't any issues to address. You won't be able to edit the effect during this time. The previous version of your effect will still be available in the camera until the new version is approved.

Review policies may have changed since you first published the effect. Learn more about our policies.
