Sampling textures in vertex stage in SparkSL

According to the documentation here https://sparkar.facebook.com/ar-studio/learn/sparksl/sparksl-api/textures#editing-the-ui-shader-code-asset
I should be able to use sampleLod to sample from a texture in vertex stage. But when I try, I get this error "Too many vertex textures: 1 (limit is 0)"
Is there some compatibility issue I need to fix in order to use vertex textures?
