Effects for Existing Media

Effects being applied to some existing media from a phone's camera roll.

Meta Spark Studio effects can be added to videos and photos that already exist in a device's media collection.

Only Instagram effects can be enabled for existing media (previously known as media library). Not all features can be used in effects that are enabled for existing media.

How to enable effects for existing media

  1. Go to Project in the menu bar.
  2. Click Edit Properties...
  3. Select the radio button to the right of Camera and existing media..
  4. Click Done.

All you need to do now is build your effect. Features that are not available will be grey and you won't be able to add them to your project.

Simulating with existing media

When you enable your effect for the media library you’ll be able to use the Simulator to test how your effect will look on a range of media. To do this, click the dropdown arrow at the top of the simulator and select Existing Media.

You can also add your own images to the Simulator. To do this:

  1. Click the Simulate with existing media icon at the bottom of the Simulator.
  2. To the right of the Simulate with existing media header, click +.

Then choose the image or video you want to add from your computer. Once you've added it the video or image will be listed under Simulate with existing media. Select it to see it in the Simulator.

To stop simulating with existing media:

  1. Click the dropdown arrow at the top of the Simulator.
  2. Select User (Sharing).


Effects that are enabled for the media library can't include these features:

  • Audio features and the microphone.
  • Touch gestures, including Native UI.
  • The target tracker and plane tracker.
  • Video.
